Plexxi Pulse – Twitter and Wish Lists

The end of the year always initiates reflections on the year’s major trends and industry events, as well as predictions for the year ahead. SDN has certainly been a disruptive force this past year and will continue to transform networking in 2014. Michelle McNickle (@m_mcnickle) at TechTarget recently published a list of 15 SDN experts to follow on Twitter. Networking innovators, Martin Casado (@martin_casado) of VMware and Kyle Mestery  (@mestery) of Cisco top the list and coming in at number five is Plexxi’s own Mike Bushong (@mbushong). Michelle says Mike “stands out on Twitter as an authoritative voice on both technology and business issues in SDN.” Be sure to follow Mike, if you aren’t following him already! In our video of the week, Dan Backman explains what a Plexxi FlexxPort is and how it relates to things like the Fibre Channel. Here is the video of the week and one of my reads in the Plexxi Pulse – enjoy and happy holidays!

Shamus McGillicuddy at TechTarget explains how the SearchNetworking team asked network engineers to tell them their 2014 technology wish lists. According to Shamus, network engineers are asking Santa for cheaper ports and a next-generation firewall from Cisco, among other requests this year. What I find most interesting on this list are the comments about a common command-line interface (CLI) and how companies don’t compete on CLI. I wonder if OpenDaylight or FloodLight will address this problem since it seems the CLI is going to live on forever. I also wonder what compelling event will drive change as most people are attached to their user interface, which creates challenges for the users.

Michael spent the last several years at Juniper leading their SDN efforts across both service provider and enterprise markets. Prior to Juniper, Michael spent time at database supplier Sybase, and ASIC design tool companies Synopsis and Magma Design Automation. Michael's undergraduate work at the University of California Berkeley in advanced fluid mechanics and heat transfer lend new meaning to the marketing phrase "This isn't rocket science."
