An Email From a Former Colleague 12 Years Later

Whenever September 11 occurs, I remember where I was that day -- in the SYS-CON offices, watching the disasters on monitors

On the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I received this email from a former colleague and I wanted to share it with my friends on Twitter.  Since the letter is too long to tweet, I'm posting it here first.

Subject: for Fuat - from Lin - thinking back on the first Sept 11--

Dear Fuat,

(I tried sending this to you on Facebook, but because I could not find a way to do a friend request for you, Facebook sent this to your “Other” folder in your messages, which you may not check. So I am sending this to the SYS-CON office instead, hoping whoever is handling Events will pass this along to you – or maybe you are handling Events mail directly. )

It's been many years. But whenever Sept 11 occurs, I remember where I was that day -- in the SYS-CON offices, watching the disasters on the computer monitors. And I always think about your reaction to it all -- how much you love this country, and how horrified you were. I also always recall you as being a person with a great heart. My son is a rocket scientist: after graduating at the top of his class at Cornell in aeronautical engineering, he went to work in Los Angeles for SpaceX, working on concepts for improvements in the Falcon rockets. He loves his work and living in California. I am very proud of him. I am fine, am still single, and am working for Ogilvy as a medical editor in Parsippany. From time to time, Gail Schultz shows up here as a freelancer. I hike, I dance, and I have many friends. Life is good.

I hope that you are doing well, that your business continues to thrive, and that there is much happiness in your life. I also hope Sofia is safe, and that she is no longer in Syria—I can tell that has been a heartache for you in recent years. I hope she finally is somewhere that you can visit her.

Regards, Lin Goetz
