Symantec CEO May Be Commerce Secretary Yet

Judd Gregg withdrew from Obama Administration due to irreconcilable differences

Symantec's retiring CEO John W. Thompson looked a shoo-in to be secretary of commerce in the Obama administration. Then President Obama up and reached across the aisle and tapped Republican Senator Judd Gregg.

Late Thursday Gregg withdrew citing irreconcilable differences between him and the White House's controversial stimulus package as well as its views on the next census. This is the second time Obama has struck out on a commerce appointment. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, his first choice, withdrew over some hanky-panky with state contracts. Thompson's time may have finally come.
