Intel and Adobe Putting Flash on TV

Cable set-top boxes, Blu-ray Disc players, digital TVs and retail-connected AV devices

Adobe and Intel plan to collaborate on porting Adobe’s Flash widgetry to Intel’s Media Processor CE 3100, a way to put Flash-enhanced web content and rich Flash applications on television. The chip is bound for cable set-top boxes, Blu-ray Disc players, digital TVs and retail-connected AV devices.

The Intel part is the first of a new family of purpose-built System on Chips (SoCs) for CE devices.

The collaboration embraces both the Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Flash Lite. Intel said it plans to ship the first CE3100 that supports Flash Lite before mid-2009.

The companies said they want rich video and Internet content "across the full breadth of consumer devices."

Intel and Adobe are founding members of the Open Screen Project, designed to enable a consistent runtime environment across screens and dedicated to enabling web content, standalone applications and full web browsing across televisions, set-top boxes, mobile devices and other consumer electronics that take advantage of Adobe AIR and Flash.

The companies said they are also working together to deliver an optimized implementation of AIR to Intel's digital home platform at some point down the road.
