Convergence of Web, Mobile and Desktop Apps is the Next Phase

Exclusive Q&A with Jeremy Chone, CTO of Nexaweb

Web 2.0 Journal: Does the Nexaweb Enterprise Web 2.0 Suite typically retain the original application logic of a legacy app, wholly or in part?

Jeremy Chone: For SOA based applications, Nexaweb Enterprise Web 2.0 arcthitecture allows companies to retain all the application and business logic. For legacy application (not SOA enabled), Nexaweb Enterprise Web 2.0 retains the application logic of a legacy application where it meets the needs of the business. Since Nexaweb technology can quickly identify redundant or bad code, it ensures that only the integrity of the information in the applications is used in the modernization process.

Nexaweb Enterprise Web 2.0 Suite is designed with SOA as its core. SOA enabling a legacy application is often the first step of a modernization process. Nexaweb technologies sit on top of an SOA application.

Web 2.0 Journal: Your Chairman – and predecessor as CTO – Coach Wei once defined “Web 2.0” computing architecture as being neither server-centric nor client-centric but rather an “architecture of partition” that enables developers to choose the right architectural partition for applications. Do you agree that this requires the acceptance of a whole new paradigm shift, or is the shift already well underway?

Chone: Actually, the beauty about the “architecture of partition” concept is that this is up to the user to decide if they want or need a paradigm shift. One approach to RIA is to force a paradigm shift, another one, taken by Nexaweb from Coach Wei's leadership, is to offer a inclusive architecture which give choices to the users.
For developers, the goal is to quickly and efficiently introduce new technologies without interrupting the way the company is run so that the organization can meet is business goals.

Web 2.0 Journal:
With your personal experience not only of Adobe but also of Microsoft and Oracle, you have worked at three of the industry’s absolute top companies. Can a smaller, privately held company like Nexaweb truly compete in the fiercely competitive RIA space when it is so completely surrounded by giants?

Chone: Absolutely. As Clayton M. Christensen discussed in his famous Innovator’s Dilemma book, being a smaller more focused entity does offer unique advantages compared to bigger organizations. I think that our capability to innovate and bring real technology value to the software industry in a inclusive, open and flexible manner, was, is and will be our core differentiator.
Nexaweb is a nimble player that has already had tremendous success with industry leaders such as Best Western, Aflac and DHL. While the industry is competitive, I believe that we’ll see a shakeout and the clear leaders will be decided by customers who have realized cost savings and productivity benefits from a standards-based approach.
Web 2.0 Journal: What duty or duties of care do you feel a senior role like CTO brings with it for a top software executive in the first decade of the twenty-first century?

Chone: It’s a combination of deep industry knowledge, business acumen and flexibility to respond to changing customer demands, business needs and industry shifts. While the last decade was focused on the Web, the next phase in the evolution of our industry will be on the convergence of Web, mobile and desktop applications and the ability to extend existing applications with these new technologies for a consistent user experience regardless of how and where the information is viewed.

So, in short, the duty of any top software executive should be to bring breakthrough innovation to the market in a most accessible way.

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
