NEW YORK, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Resting on an already-high replacement market, but springing toward a shorter replacement cycle based on new flammability regulations, evolving technologies, and increasing health and wellness benefits, the market value for mattresses shipped, imported, and exported from the United States is expected to grow from $7.6 billion in 2007 to $10.9 billion by 2011, according to U.S. Market for Mattresses, a new report from market research publisher SBI.
From 2002 to 2006, the value of mattress shipments increased 11% annually as a result of fairly substantial increases after 2003. Imports grew at an 18% CAGR, slightly faster than exports (14%). For the projected period, 2007 through 2011, SBI forecasts strong growth of exports, from $246 million in 2007 to $438 million in 2011 (a 16% CAGR), as U.S. companies target new markets, particularly in Asia. Imports are expected to grow at a slightly lower CAGR, 12% over the next five years, while shipments, the largest segment of the mattress market, will post a 10% CAGR.
While younger consumers, particularly those with children, will be drawn to the new standards, both younger and older Americans will be drawn to specialty mattresses. Younger Americans may be "early adopters" who want to be among the first to have a new product or technology, while older Americans will appreciate the health and wellness benefits.
"Luxury and specialty (non-innerspring) bedding are showing the most growth and offer companies the highest margins," notes Cathy Minkler, Associate Editor of SBI. "Consumer interest in alternatives to standard innerspring mattresses may be partly due to the perception that innersprings are outdated and not state of the art. This is more likely to be a factor for Gen X and Gen Y, for whom innovation is an important part of their lifestyle."
Covering mattress shipments, imports, and exports, U.S. Market for Mattresses identifies key trends affecting the marketplace, profiles major marketers, and examines manufacturers' strategies for maximizing growth and profitability.
