Interview with Solix CEO, Sai Gundavelli, CEO and Founder of Solix

Enterprise Archiving Application Based on Apache Hadoop Enables Low Cost Bulk Data Storage

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Please tell us, what Solix is  all about and what do you do?

Sai Gundavelli: Solix Technologies, Inc. is a leading provider of Enterprise Data Management (EDM) solutions - we are transforming information management with the first enterprise archiving and data lake application suite for big data, called the Solix Big Data Suite. Solix is helping organizations learn more from their data with enterprise analytics and achieving Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) goals. The Solix Enterprise Data Management Suite (Solix EDMS) and Solix EDMS Standard Edition enables organizations to improve application performance, meet compliance objectives and reduce the cost of data management across the enterprise.

My responsibility as CEO at Solix is to oversee the vision and strategic direction of the company.

Who is your target audience and how do you intend to reach them?

Gundavelli: We are empowering data management for the Enterprise and have an array of products to fit different enterprise needs and industries including finance, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, telecom and government.

Solix's integrated platform for database archiving and application retirement supports Cloudera as a repository for both unstructured and structured data, which enables applications to scale enterprise-wide and meet the challenges of exploding data growth.

The Hadoop ecosystem is becoming the incumbent data platform. It brings powerful new capabilities for collecting and analyzing data. Solix delivers a platform for database archiving, application retirement, data warehousing and processing for the performance and scalability requirements of today's enterprise.

What are your thoughts on the future of Enterprise archiving and data lake?

Gundavelli: Both Enterprise Archiving and Data Lake on Hadoop offer massively scalable, low cost data storage with the enhanced ability to easily access data by text search as well as structured query.

Are you cloud and infrastructure agonistic? or do you only work with Hadoop infrastructure?

Gundavelli: Solix Big Data Suite runs on Apache Hadoop and is certified on Cloudera CDH 5.4. We support Amazon AWS and Openstack virtualized environments, and  Solix Big Data Suite is also available as an appliance solution.

Is cloud infrastructure on Hadoop cheaper than a traditional data warehouse? If yes, why?

Gundavelli: Apache Hadoop is free and open source, and designed to leverage powerful, new, low-cost infrastructure to deliver massive scalability. Using the MapReduce programming model to process large datasets across distributed compute nodes in parallel, Hadoop delivers highly scalable workload performance and very low cost. Bulk data storage cost on Hadoop may be less than $1,000 per terabyte compared to orders of magnitude higher for tier one infrastructure.

Does Solix technology disrupt the industry? or are you focused on faster and better service?

Gundavelli: Archiving is not a new concept, but now we are running our archiving as an application on Apache Hadoop, and Apache Hadoop is certainly a disruptive new technology.

Who are your competitors, and how do you differentiate from them and their technology?

Gundavelli: We are named a leader in Gartner's magic quadrant report alongside IBM, HP and Informatica. However, we are the only vendor offering Enterprise archiving and Data Lake on Apache Hadoop.

What's your business model?

Gundavelli: Solix Big Data Suite is available as a software license. Solix professional services are available on a project basis.

What can you tell me about the story of the company's founding?

Gundavelli: Solix is located in Santa Clara, CA and I founded the company in 2002. Previously, I was an engineer and early stage employee at Cisco, where I specialized in database management.

What is your distribution model? Where to buy your product?

Gundavelli: Solix operates a direct sales force and a network of resellers worldwide. Sales offices are located in Santa Clara, London, Paris, Dubai, and Hyderabad, and Sydney.

What's next on your product roadmap?

Gundavelli: SAP archiving will be available during the second half of 2015

What else would you like to add?

Gundavelli: Solix is the first packaged application for enterprise archiving and data lake to run on Apache Hadoop. With Apache Hadoop, organizations can dramatically improve data management efficiency, and dramatically reduce the cost of their infrastructure.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...
Cloud computing delivers on-demand resources that provide businesses with flexibility and cost-savings. The challenge in moving workloads to the cloud has been the cost and complexity of ensuring the initial and ongoing security and regulatory (PCI, HIPAA, FFIEC) compliance across private and public clouds. Manual security compliance is slow, prone to human error, and represents over 50% of the cost of managing cloud applications. Determining how to automate cloud security compliance is critical...
Enterprises have taken advantage of IoT to achieve important revenue and cost advantages. What is less apparent is how incumbent enterprises operating at scale have, following success with IoT, built analytic, operations management and software development capabilities - ranging from autonomous vehicles to manageable robotics installations. They have embraced these capabilities as if they were Silicon Valley startups.
Disruption, Innovation, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Leadership and Management hear these words all day every day... lofty goals but how do we make it real? Add to that, that simply put, people don't like change. But what if we could implement and utilize these enterprise tools in a fast and "Non-Disruptive" way, enabling us to glean insights about our business, identify and reduce exposure, risk and liability, and secure business continuity?
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound e...

In today's enterprise, digital transformation represents organizational change even more so than technology change, as customer preferences and behavior drive end-to-end transformation across lines of business as well as IT. To capitalize on the ubiquitous disruption driving this transformation, companies must be able to innovate at an increasingly rapid pace.
Predicting the future has never been more challenging - not because of the lack of data but because of the flood of ungoverned and risk laden information. Microsoft states that 2.5 exabytes of data are created every day. Expectations and reliance on data are being pushed to the limits, as demands around hybrid options continue to grow.
"MobiDev is a Ukraine-based software development company. We do mobile development, and we're specialists in that. But we do full stack software development for entrepreneurs, for emerging companies, and for enterprise ventures," explained Alan Winters, U.S. Head of Business Development at MobiDev, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu...
