The CEO Is Dead, Long Live the CIO & CEO By @ABridgwater [#Cloud #BigData]

CIOs are having to run their IT operations as business units that are fully accountable to the CFO and the CEO

Perhaps not quite as clear-cut as a logical AND in the programmatic sense, but the age of the CEO as we once knew it could be over.

There's a simple reason for this, CIOs (and yes of course we do mean Chief Information Officers) are starting to run their operations as business entities in their own right.

In no way detracting from the popular assertion that IT has to "progress from simply being a function in the business to now become a business enabling function in and of itself" (as the expression goes)... there's an even deeper truth to realize.

This even more profound truism rests upon the fact that:

  1. CIOs are having to run their IT operations as business units that are fully accountable to the CFO and the CEO
  2. CIOs are becoming more welcome at the board room table
  3. CIOs are (because of both a and b factors above) gaining a higher degree of wider business acumen and are therefore starting to operate more like business leaders in their own right

These suggested points come about at a time when CEOs (if they do indeed still exist) have the opportunity to consider the IT function as a business enabler, i.e., a place where they can focus upon, target and zone-in on pain points where new competitive advantage can be achieved.

The consequential corollary factors
What happens if even 10% of the above line of suggestion is true? Well first, the CEO may have to integrate more openly with the CIO if the CIO isn't to usurp some of the CEOs functions in the long term.

Does this sound like a crazy or even fanciful suggestion? Well, how many times have we been told that "all firms are software firms now" due to the degree to which software-centric systems run so many aspects and channels of every firm in every business vertical.

No, the CEO is not dead and the CIO is not taking over in any all-consuming way this year or next, but the balance of power is shifting and we need to be aware of the wider trends that happen across the C-level boardroom space as they are impacted by the so-called "new style of IT" as it takes hold.
