Harper Government Invites Tenders for Construction Project at Burlington Canal Lift Bridge

BURLINGTON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 08/22/14 -- Public Works and Government Services Canada

Mike Wallace, Member of Parliament for Burlington, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, today announced that the Government of Canada has issued an invitation to tender for the upcoming construction project at the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge to replace key components of the bridge lift system.

The four-lane Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, completed in 1962, spans the Burlington Bay Canal, which connects Lake Ontario to the Port of Hamilton. The bridge is not only a highway link between Burlington and Hamilton for thousands of commuters daily, but its lift function allows both commercial marine and pleasure craft traffic to move freely between Lake Ontario and the Port of Hamilton.

The Harper Government recognizes the importance of investing in infrastructure like the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge to both provide accessible transit options and create jobs and economic growth.

Construction will take place over winter 2015 and winter 2016 during the regular periods of closure for the Burlington Canal. The project is expected to be completed in March 2016.

Quick Facts

- An invitation to tender has been released on Buyandsell.gc.ca/tenders. It will close on October 7, 2014.

- The Burlington Canal Lift Bridge is part of Public Works and Government Services Canada's (PWGSC) portfolio of 19 engineering assets, which include bridges and dams located across the country. PWGSC is carrying out a five-year rehabilitation and maintenance plan worth approximately $250 million for these assets to ensure their continued functionality and availability.

- The bridge is the only local route for commercial and non-commercial vehicles travelling between the east side of Burlington and Hamilton and is used by cyclists and pedestrians as well. It is also the only alternative route when the Burlington Skyway Bridge is closed.

Quotes

"Our Government's top priorities remain job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity. The Burlington Canal Lift Bridge is an important piece of regional infrastructure that will serve thousands of Canadians daily and create jobs, providing both local and regional benefits."

The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services

"These investments in infrastructure will support the economy, while also ensuring that we continue to provide safe public infrastructure for all Canadians. This project will replace the components that control the lift system of the bridge, ensuring its continued safety and functionality."

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
