On the heels of DocuSign being honored as AlwaysOn’s OnDemand 100 Company of the Year, we enlisted AlwaysOn Founder and Editor Tony Perkins to map out the realities and trends in today’s business environment.
During our chat, we asked Tony to explain how cloud and mobile technologies have converted American business into a fluid and synergistic culture. Read on to learn how to electrify your business and drive results.
DocuSign – Tell us how business has evolved over the past few years.
Tony – Let’s focus on three disruptive movements that now define how we navigate our professional lives.
Cloud – The transition to cloud computing and storage responds to the historical challenge of transparency and completing work from multiple platforms. More than ever, we own our business results and collaboration with the fluidity of a paperless platform.
Smartphones – Mobile technologies aptly feed into this fluidity: Business is boundless and borderless. In fact, I’ve long since stashed away my landline phones and rightly so, as the plug in the wall is simply a means of recharging, not one of connection.
Flexibility and Mobility – A prominent side effect of mobile cloud platforms is that we’re embracing a virtualized convention to the workforce that fuels and thrives on results. This simply means we’ve refined the concept of working smarter, not longer.
DocuSign - With those drivers in place, how would you describe the overall shift in our business needs?
Tony - These trends and needs illustrate Work/Life Synergy. As our work is no longer stationary, neither are our work lives. Digital Transaction Management (DTM) and mobile platforms tailor to our goals, both in business and in life. This touches again on working smarter. For example, with my work in my pocket, I can devote time to my family and take care of myself. My work and career reap every benefit. In fact, I predict an onslaught of thought leadership around leveraging mobile and DTM technologies in the workplace to make life better outside the workplace (as well as in the workplace, of course).
DocuSign - On that note, what are the key traits and practices that are integral to success in this new digital economy?
Tony - As the Internet serves as the business world’s axis, people need to be actively conversant on their online channels. Also, as a workforce, we are increasingly independent and completion-oriented. Everything is more measurable. This shift calls for a strong grasp of online data platforms, such as Salesforce and other CRM systems, to prove and share results. Social media is also an impactful tool to hook instant traction and visibility for products or ideas. Ultimately, you must be flexible and adaptable to the latest innovations. It’s not solely about usage, but more about leveraging these tools to the fullest extent to maximize your ROI.
DocuSign - Do you think our recent digital innovations will improve opportunity inequality in our new global economy?
Tony - This underscores the emerging need for digital intelligence. I believe that the sooner you are exposed to the new breed of digital and mobile technologies, such as tablets and smartphones, the better you’ll fare in the workforce. That being said, for the later generations, it is never too late to keep up with - or get ahead of - the curve by consistently exploring the latest tools to hit the market.
DocuSign - How will digital intelligence be applied in the new economy?
Tony – Following on that thought, digital service based companies are steadily making substantial headway in the economy. Consider Uber, mobile services that hand you control over travel plans; likewise, Uber gives control to taxi drivers over contracting their services. Essentially, we should look forward to an economy of instant choice. Mobile apps similar to Uber, such as those for health care, will allow doctors to sign on when they’re willing to see patients. Of course, mobile apps will give patients instant access to these on-call doctors. Because we’re collectively hooked on mobile and the instant gratification of the mobile experience, we’ve deleted the middleman to accelerate speed in the transaction experience.
DocuSign - What about the public sector? Why do you think the public sector is slow to integrate digital solutions, such as Digital Transaction Management?
Tony - Government is unfortunately broken and in partisan divide. However, because of the breadth of mobile and cloud-based integrations in our economy and society, we the people sharpen our universal demand for efficiency and flexibility. As government historically responds to society’s transitions, they will eventually embrace this new virtual reality, especially as the millennial generation comes of age in the workforce.
DocuSign - Speaking of the near future, what are some noteworthy innovations in the market pipeline?
Tony - We center our lives around our mobile devices. I recall a report that said that we access our mobile phones around 165 times per day. I venture a hunch that the grand majority of those occasions were to check the time. As such, I really see smart watches and other wearable devices that would streamline our lives one step further. All pertinent information – time included – just in the turn of the wrist, but with the advances of mobile technology on your smart watch to take the value beyond today’s options.
Speaking of seamless processes, I think we’re going to integrate our mobile phones with our automobiles in that the data present on our phones syncs with our automobile in a safe and easy fashion. At the end of the day, it’s all about synergizing our lives as seamlessly as possible.
