Cloud as a Growth Engine for Business

Meet IBM at Cloud Expo New York

Cloud Expo® New York Early Bird Savings here!

The cloud opens up new possibilities for businesses to continuously deliver software-driven innovation and enables new ways of collaboration. At 14th Cloud Expo, IBM, SoftLayer, an IBM Company, and Cloudant, an IBM Company, offer numerous sessions that cover many aspects of cloud and Big Data from how to leverage a cloud architecture, make Big Data cost effective, to how to take advantage of a multitude of compute options and platform features to make cloud the cornerstone of your online presence.

Lunch Keynote | Cloud as a Growth Engine for Business - Unleashing Software-Driven Innovation - June 10, 12:15 - 1:00 pm
Dr Kristof Kloeckner, General Manager at Rational Software, IBM
In a world of ever accelerating business cycles and fast-changing client expectations, the cloud increasingly serves as a growth engine and a path to new business models. Dynamic clouds enable businesses to continuously reinvent themselves, adapting their business processes, their service and software delivery and their operations to achieve speed to market and quick response to customer feedback. The cloud opens up new possibilities for businesses to continuously deliver software-driven innovation and enables new ways of collaboration between an extended group of stakeholders, including business leaders, developers, operations as well customers and partners. To illustrate this, we will discuss the capabilities of BlueMix, IBM's Cloud Platform, with integrated DevOps Services. With BlueMix, developers can compose applications in a tight feedback loop, using a wealth of IBM, third party and open source services and APIs, deploy and scale with infrastructure services from SoftLayer and code with the confidence based on a foundation of open standards.

General Session | How to Architect and Optimize Your Cloud for Consistent Performance - June 11, 1:35 - 2:05 pm
Marc Jones, Vice President of Product Innovation at SoftLayer
Performance is the intersection of power, agility, control, and choice. If you value performance, and more specifically consistent performance, you need to look beyond simple virtualized compute. Many factors need to be considered to create a truly performant environment. Learn how to take advantage of a multitude of compute options and platform features to make cloud the cornerstone of your online presence.

Making Big Data Cost Effective in a Bare Metal Cloud - June 12, 2:50 - 3:25 pm
Harold Hannon, Sr. Software Architect at SoftLayer Technologies
The cloud provides an easy onramp to building and deploying Big Data solutions, particularly the latest technologies that favor scale-out architectures. Transitioning from initial deployment to a large-scale, highly performant operation without breaking the bank may not be easy.

Infrastructure at Scale: Best Practices in Scaling Cloud Architectures - June 10, 4:00 - 4:35 pm
Phil Jackson, Development Community Advocate at SoftLayer
Cloud scalability and performance should be at the heart of every successful internet venture. The infrastructure needs to be resilient, flexible, and fast - it's best not to get caught thinking about architecture until the middle of an emergency, when it's too late. In this interactive, no-holds-barred session, Phil Jackson dives into how to design and build-out the right cloud infrastructure.

Leveraging a Cloud Architecture for Fun, Ease, and Profit! - June 10, 11:00 - 11:35 am
Phil Jackson, Development Community Advocate at SoftLayer, and Harold Hannon, Sr. Software Architect at SoftLayer Technologies
The world of cloud and application development is not just for the hardened developer these days. In this discussion we will pull back the curtain of the architecture of a fun demo application purpose built for the cloud. We will focus on demonstrating how we leveraged compute, storage, messaging, and other cloud elements hosted at SoftLayer to lower the effort and difficulty of putting together a useful application. This will be an active demonstration and review of simple command line tools and resources, so don't be afraid if you may not be a seasoned developer.

Searching NoSQL: Utilizing More Than Map-Reduce with Cloudant - June 12, 2:50 - 3:25 pm
Brad Bonn, Systems Engineer at Cloudant
Normally in a document database such as CouchDB or BigCouch, data is queried using b-tree indexes built with map-reduce functions. Cloudant has extended the platform to natively take advantage of Lucene and R*-Tree indexes to make obtaining data out of NoSQL DBaaS more powerful and flexible.

Systems of Discovery - The Perfect Storm of Big Data, Cloud and Internet-of-Things - June 10, 11:40 - 12:15 pm
Mac Devine, Distinguished Engineer at IBM
Almost everyone sees the potential of Internet-of-Things but how can businesses truly unlock that potential. The key will be in the ability to discover business insight in the midst of an ocean of BigData generated from billions of embedded devices via Systems of Discover. Businesses will also need to ensure that they can sustain that insight by leveraging the cloud for global reach, scale and elasticity. Without bringing these three elements together via Systems of Discover you either end up with an Internet of somethings and/or a big mess of data. This session will focus on how to ensure businesses have the right plans in place for Systems of Discovery for the Internet-of-Things world we are entering.

Big Data's Potential in Securing the Internet of Things - June 11, 2:50 - 3:25 pm
James G. Kobielus, IBM Big Data Evangelist at IBM
Security is critical to Internet of Things (IoT) adoption because we want to make sure we can trust the sensors, actuators, rules engines and other connected componentry we embed in every element of our existence. Bringing this down to earth is as easy as pointing out that people's smartphones, tablets, wearable devices, appliances, entertainment centers and home security systems are all becoming IoT-connected endpoints. How vulnerable will you be to security vulnerabilities and privacy violations from any and all of these? In this session, Kobielus will discuss how IT professionals should approach addressing the security challenges of IoT. He will describe IoT vulnerabilities at the device, application, and network level. He will present a multi-layered IoT-security vision that includes incorporation of robust security protections into IoT products plus more global approaches that rely on consolidated big-data-powered security incident and event monitoring.

Wiring the Internet of Things with Node-RED - June 10, 4:00 - 4:35 pm
Nick O'Leary, Emerging Technology Specialist at IBM
The Internet of Things is not a single choice of technology, approach or philosophy. Its very existence is the bringing together of multiple platforms, products and protocols, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. One of the challenges of IoT is to make it as easy as possible to allow developers to make things, for play or profit, serious or whimsical, professional or hobbyist. Node-RED is an open-source visual tool for wiring the Internet of Things. Built on top of node.js, it provides a light-weight, browser-based editor that makes it easy to integrate different streams of both physical and digital events.

Its lightweight nature makes it ideal to run at the edge of the network, such as on the Raspberry Pi. By making use of the huge module eco-system within node.js, it provides a framework for easily adding new nodes into its palette to extends its capabilities.

This session introduces Node-RED, demonstrates what it can do and how it can be easily extended.
