Digital Badges primer – Harnessing Cloud best practice learning and marketing

Our site has been upgraded to generate ‘digital badges‘, a core mechanic that will facilitate our overall strategy of evolving to become a “virtual university” for e-learning the required skills to adopt Cloud computing.

Naturally our courses will be built around Cloud best practices, and via a modular curriculum

Digital Badges 101

For a quick primer on Digital Badges here are a few good articles:

First – We’ll be using Credly, which issues ‘open badges‘, developed by Mozilla and explained helpfully in this Q&A overview.

Education is of course one of the primary activities it can be used for, and how they can be integrated into learning is described through materials such as this issue of THE, this article from one educator who has adopted them, and how Georgia University have started using them for their executive training, by creating Robinson Digital Badges.

As described in this article:

“Purdue University is an early adopter of the digital badge concept for online higher education and has developed mobile applications to make their system run smoother and more efficiently.

A pair of mobile apps, Passport and Passport Profile, make it easy for students and instructors to create, award, and display badges, which enables Purdue to recognize skills earned in the untraditional learning environment. The Passport app helps teachers organize the criteria and objectives to create badges with tangible value for the earned achievement. Students use the Passport Profile app or any Mozilla Open Badge profile to display their badges on social media sites and personal pages.”

Of course learning isn’t something constrained only to the classroom, it’s a process we are all going through all the time, as we engage with new people, jobs, web sites and much more.

This is important because digital badges can be used for more than just teaching situations.

Most important is how it can facilitate better ‘digital engagement’, a means of tapping the whole social networking trend, attracting and engaging potential customers more effectively online.

A great example is the Smithsonian Institute – Their digital badges program, Smithsonian Quests, offers an incentive to children to become active learners, earning badges for submitting work such as this example student.

Educational institutions have to engage their markets online too, and this begins to show how it can enable organizations to master the key aspects of social media that make it attractive to key demographics like Millennials.

For example in Coastal Carolina University they have used badges for a creative writing course, and not only do they have to complete the work but also submit it alongside a ‘selfie’, a picture they take of themselves that is included in an online community too.

Digital badges for business innovation

This same effect can be harnessed by businesses too.

As described in this article smart marketeers are tapping into ‘gamification’, creating fun ways to engage customers into their brand.

For example Nike ran a gamified campaign, rewarding those who take part in various sporting activities with badges, and Dell issue them to their online ‘social selling’ reps to engage with potential customers online, following the required training to do so.

Starbucks has integrated them into their MyRewards program, establishing them as a foundational component part of online loyalty engagement methods.

Pearson is a notable education publishing and assessment service company that has joined the digital badging movement with their Open Badge credentialing platform, Acclaim. This platform takes digital badges a step beyond online display of achievement by providing a way to share and validate learning outcomes through high-credibility organizations.
