Die Suche von BE OPEN nach der Zukunft der Kreativität beginnt in Indien, mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Handarbeit

BE OPEN, die globale philanthropische Stiftung, gab letzten Monat ihre Absicht bekannt, ein weltweites Projekt ins Leben zu rufen, das sich mit Handarbeit beschäftigt sowie mit der Frage, wie sich deren Existenz in Zukunft sichern lässt.  

"Made in …" ist Teil des BE-OPEN-Themas für das kommende Jahr: Norden/Süden - Osten/Westen.  Die Entdeckungsreise beginnt in Indien, mit seinem reichhaltigen Erbe an handwerklicher Fabrikation. Im Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in Neu-Delhi sollen Werke von rund fünfzehn Designern ausgestellt werden, in eigens vom Architekten Anupama Kundoo eingerichteten und mit einer Markenidentität versehenen Räumlichkeiten.  "Made in India" ist jedoch alles andere als nur eine Ausstellung zeitgenössischer Handwerkskunst. Vielmehr ist es der experimentelle Versuch, vor Ort in Handarbeit hergestellte Waren neu zu positionieren, um ihnen einen globalen Reiz zu verleihen.  

Die Gründerin von BE OPEN, Yelena Baturina, sagt: "Geschäft ist Teil meiner DNA, ich kann also gar nicht anders, als auch in dieses Projekt einen geschäftlichen Ansatz mit einzubringen. Wir haben das Gefühl, dass die Zukunft der Handarbeit darin liegt, sie aus dem moribunden Museumsumfeld zu befreien und sie stattdessen leben und atmen zu lassen, indem man sie zu einem Teil des Wirtschaftslebens macht.  In Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Experten hat BE OPEN sich die vielversprechendsten indischen Designer unserer Tage vorgenommen, sie dazu angehalten, gedanklich über ihre üblichen Märkte hinauszugehen, und ihnen die Möglichkeit gegeben, ihre Arbeiten unter einem völlig neuen Blickwinkel zu präsentieren, um so ein viel größeres, internationales Publikum anzusprechen.  ,Made In…' startet nicht zuletzt deswegen in Indien, weil dessen Kultur eine derartig faszinierende und krasse Dichotomie zwischen Tradition und Moderne aufweist.  Dies bedeutet auch, dass es dort eine immense Tradition an kunstfertiger Arbeit gibt sowie die Bereitschaft, diese in die Zukunft zu übertragen."

BE OPEN arbeitet für dieses Projekt mit dem berühmten Designberater Sunil Sethi zusammen, der an der Auswahl der ausgestellten Werke beteiligt war. Dazu gehören: Mode von Abraham und Thakore und Rahul Mishra, Stoffe von Ezma und Rasa, Möbel von Bombay Atelier und Ayush Kasliwal, Produkte von Gunjan Gupta und Sahil & Sarthak sowie Lichtdesign von Klove.  Obwohl keines der Stücke zum Verkauf steht, werden die Arbeiten so vorgestellt, als seien sie Teil einer neuen Marke - mit einheitlichem Logo, einheitlichen Labels, Anhängern und Einkaufstüten.

Zusätzlich zur Installation werden in einer Podiumsdiskussion bekannte internationale Design- und Modeexperten Erfahrungen austauschen und über ihren Ansatz in Bezug auf die Zukunft der Handarbeit in einer globalisierten Welt diskutieren.

Die Aktivitäten von BE OPEN in Indien gehen einher mit einem Ideenwettbewerb in Form einer Kampagne über das Internet und soziale Medien, in deren Rahmen indische Designstudenten dazu aufgefordert werden, unter dem Motto "Imagine your Ideal Indian Object" ihre Konzepte für das ultimative zeitgenössische indische Produkt einzureichen. Zugleich soll ein internationaler Wettbewerb mit dem Titel "India Through My Eyes" Beiträge finden, die wiedergeben, welches Bild wir heute von Indien haben.  Den jeweiligen Gewinnern der Wettbewerbe werden Reisekosten und sämtliche Spesen für das nächste internationale BE-OPEN-Event erstattet.

"Made In India" macht sich nicht nur für die indische Handwerkskunst stark - es hat auch einen globalen Ansatz. BE OPENs Mission für dieses Projekt besteht darin, Handwerker aus aller Welt dazu anzuregen, alternative Einsatzmöglichkeiten für traditionelle handwerkliche Fähigkeiten zu finden und diese damit am Leben zu erhalten. Die nächste Veranstaltung, "Made in Japan", soll im Herbst 2014 in Tokio stattfinden.
