SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/08/13 -- NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced that IDC ranked NetApp® Data ONTAP® as the #1 Branded Storage Operating System (OS) during the calendar year 2012 within the open networked disk storage systems market. IDC's Branded Storage OS results* measure the value of the worldwide external disk storage systems market by revenue and new capacity shipments based on the underlying storage operating system in use. Data ONTAP ranked #1 in both categories, finishing 2012 with 15.8% revenue share and 21.4% capacity share within the open networked disk storage systems market.
Built on more than 20 years of innovation, Data ONTAP has evolved to meet the changing needs of customers and help drive their success. Clustered Data ONTAP, the latest version of Data ONTAP, combines the richest data management feature set with clustering for unlimited scale, operational efficiency, and nondisruptive operations to provide customers with a compelling value proposition that is currently unmatched in the industry. The IT landscape is undergoing a fundamental shift to IT as a service, a model that requires a pool of compute, network, and storage to serve a wide range of applications and deliver a wide range of services. Innovations such as clustered Data ONTAP are fueling this revolution.
"This recognition from IDC further reinforces Data ONTAP's position as the industry's #1 branded storage OS," said Brendon Howe, vice president, Product and Solutions Marketing, NetApp. "With the new capabilities of clustered Data ONTAP, the biggest innovation in NetApp's history, we're excited about extending our leadership position. Now more than ever agility is critical to business success and clustered Data ONTAP enables this for customers by delivering increased infrastructure efficiencies, the ability to grow without limits, and continuous data access. We are seeing accelerated use of these new capabilities and today's announcement builds on this momentum."

Clustered Data ONTAP Fuels Customer Growth
Cirrity, based in Atlanta, Georgia, is a channel-focused cloud services provider with an emphasis on serving customers that operate in heavily regulated industries. To support its growing customer base, Cirrity requires an IT infrastructure that can scale simply and seamlessly. Because Cirrity works closely with customers in vertical industries such as healthcare and finance, their infrastructure must deliver nonstop availability and high performance without fail.
"Business continuity is hugely critical to Cirrity's reputation," said Dan Timko, president and CTO, Cirrity. "Clustered Data ONTAP allows us to nondisruptively move our data from stack to stack as our application requirements change. This means that our customers never experience a break in service, which is important since so many of them operate in 24/7 environments. Also, as we continue to grow, we can easily scale to add just the amount of storage capacity that we need. This helps reduce our overall costs and allows us to focus our spending on other parts of the business."
UZ Leuven is the largest hospital in Belgium and one of the largest healthcare providers in Europe, with approximately 8,500 employees across five locations. Doctors and patients both rely on the hospital's IT infrastructure to support around-the-clock care, which requires a storage foundation that is always-on and can address the wealth of data generated by the hospital's electronic medical record system.
"We need the ability to quickly and easily scale our infrastructure to support from 2,000 to 6,000 beds across our network of hospitals," said Reinoud Reynders, IT manager of Infrastructure and Operations, UZ Leuven. "With each new patient comes additional data and information that must be accessible to our doctors whenever they need it. Clustered Data ONTAP provides us with the ability to grow as needed, seamlessly manage unpredictable data growth, and experience zero downtime while doing it. This is an important factor in making sure that our patients get the care they need."
