Jhaqueil Reagan, an 18-year-old young man from Indianapolis, needed a job.
You see, two years ago he had to quit school and get his GED in order to stay home and take care of his younger siblings after his mother died.
Setting off for a job interview, he didn’t have the money for bus fare…so, he started walking. Along the way through the ice and snow, he stopped to ask a man — who turned out to be named Art Bouvier — how much farther it would be to his intended location, 10th and Sherman. The answer? Six to seven MILES.
“He thanked me and continued on,” said Bouvier, as he wrote of the encounter in a now viral Facebook post. “He could have asked me for money for a bus. In fact I quite expected him to. He didn’t. He just started walking.”
Later, as Bouvier and his wife were driving, they spotted Reagan again — still trudging through the ice and snow to his interview. They pulled over and asked Reagan if they could drive him to his destination.
What Reagan could not have known is that Art and Colleen Roux are the owners of Papa Roux Po Boys and Cajun Food at 10th and Post on the east side of Indy. Art — also known as “Papa” — told Jhaqueil Reagan to keep the scheduled job interview, but to also come see Roux for a job at his restaurant.
In a phone interview with TheBlaze, Bouvier went on to say he told Reagan whatever the other shop offered him, he would double it. Bouvier then told TheBlaze.com that Reagan later learned although he did well in the interview with the other establishment, the position had already been filled.
“I’m thinking to myself, here’s a kid walking almost 10 miles in the ice and slush and snow for the hope of a job at minimum wage,” Bouvier told Indianapolis television station FOX 59. “That’s the kind of story your parents used to tell, my parents used to tell, up both ways in the snow.”
However, there’s more to the story than you might imagine.
You see, Bouvier’s place really didn’t have enough business to pay for that additional, new employee. However, when the story of the owner and the young man who both displayed such extraordinary distinction went viral…well, as TheBlaze.com puts it:
“A local writer for the website Positively Indy, shared an account of this story and wrote it is the ‘terrific’ food and stories like this that have him continuing to support Papa Roux.
“‘The people is where the magic is in this endeavor,’ Jason Bean wrote.”
Now, the place is packed — not only because (as the many comments posted after several blogs about the story testify) the food is terrific at Papa Roux Po Boys and Cajun Food…it’s also because the customer experience is the ultimate!
One last thing — as TheBlaze.com reports, “In addition to having a job that would be only a three mile walk from home instead of 10 miles, the local transit authority IndyGo gave Reagan a one-year pass free of charge.”
When you create distinction — you receive distinctive results.
It’s still a while before I get back home to Indianapolis…but guess where I’m going to go and eat when I do?
Wouldn’t you choose to do business with a place that creates distinction like that?
What are you doing to be just as distinctive?
