After 37 years of working in banking and other finance related employment, 55 year old Peter Clarke has made a conscious decision to change the course of his career. Over the last 6 years or so, Peter has been able to travel to some fascinating places around the world and with his passion for photography has developed an extensive portfolio of images of his travels.
Peter has now set up his own business to create and publish a unique series of pocket-sized travel guides, illustrated with his photographs from destinations he has visited around the world and, with some anecdotal tales of his experiences, these guides are aimed at helping people to plan their own holidays.
Peter says, “When I was planning my trips I didn’t know what to expect when I got there. When going to a destination for the first, and maybe the only time, I want to know what to see in order to maximise my experience in the limited time available.”
PETER’S POCKET GUIDES have been specifically designed with this in mind and include pictures and helpful tips and because of their size they do not take up much space in luggage.
The first 3 Guides in the series are now available for purchase either through Peter’s own website or online through leading booksellers, such as Amazon, Waterstones and WH Smith.
They feature Peter’s trips:
• to Norway – a voyage through the islands, mountains and fjords aboard the Hurtigruten Coastal Express (this Guide is also available to purchase on board each Hurtigruten ship);
• to China – a winter trip to Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai and Harbin to take in the Annual Ice and Snow Festival; and
• to South Africa - trips taking in Cape Town and the Winelands, the Garden Route, KwaZulu Natal Battlefields and Kruger National Park safaris.
Peter has recently travelled to Uzbekistan and India to satisfy an interest in the history of the area from the Silk Road to the ruling Khans and Emirs that eventually made their way down into Northern India to found the Mughal dynasty and to the escapades of the British and Russian ‘agents’ in Victorian times. His Guides to Uzbekistan and Northern India will be published shortly.
To keep up with developing technology, Peter will be converting his Guides into e-books to benefit those people who prefer to read via a tablet or e-reader.
Asked what made him decide to change career direction so late in his working life, Peter replied, “the stress of dealing with bureaucratic auditors became so intense, that I decided that there must be more to life that worrying about a missing bus ticket. I enjoy travel and photography so I thought that if I didn’t pursue this opportunity now then I never would and I might live to regret it. It’s a huge risk at my time of life, but you only get one chance on this planet, so I have decided to go for it. My learning curve is vertical. I have also embraced social media which has been an experience on its own!”
