LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 01/31/13 -- When most people think of the words "sustainable energy", images that spring to mind include solar panels and wind turbines. Although these may be seen as the most popular ways of generating clean energy, there are many lesser known and even unusual sources, says business electricity provider green energy uk.
Inspiring ideas for generating energy can come from pretty much anywhere, as industrial design engineer Laurence Kemball-Cook found when he thought to utilise crowded pavements. He invented Pavegen, patented floor tiles designed to convert kinetic energy from footsteps into electricity, which can be used to power nearby signs and lights.
This isn't the only example of human motion being used to generate electricity. Bar Surya in London outfitted its floor with springs that produce a current when compressed by the club's partygoers. This energy is stored in batteries and is used to run 60 per cent of the electrical devices in the club.
In Denmark, one hotelier has a novel way of enticing customers through the door who in turn help power the building. In return for free meals, guests are invited to generate electricity by cycling on an exercise bike attached to a generator.
Doug Stewart, CEO of green energy uk, says: "It's great to see that it's not only green energy providers that are passionate about generating clean energy from innovative ways. What's better than hitting the dance floor and knowing you're helping the venue to be more sustainable at the same time? We love sourcing renewable energy from interesting outlets, and that includes utilising waste such as cow pats to help light up your home, workplace or school!
"Innovative green technology ideas are essential for the environment and also help encourage more people to get involved with sustainable energy. I wonder what other weird and wonderful ideas are being dreamt up, what about an eco-friendly belt that converts excess body fat into energy - hands up who would have loved one of those after all that Christmas indulgence! Solutions like these not only source green energy but also bring it further into the spotlight. I'm excited to see what we will use to power our homes, businesses and towns in the future."
