Having worked with Leo Abrahams on the Brian Eno led Pure Scenius project, Hyde once again collaborated with him on Edgeland, a deliberately more spontaneous and organic project compared to his work with Underworld. The album was lyrically and conceptually inspired by the city's hinterlands and hidden corners.
"For over twenty years, my love of cityscapes has grown and grown," explains Hyde. "The beauty of decay, tyre marks, crude graffiti, industrial noise, overheard conversations, epidemics of coffee bars & nights on the back seat being driven through cities by drivers who never sleep. A celebration of people's idiosyncrasies, mapping out my journeys with the stories they tell, edgelands where city meets scrub, where ragged ponies grazed annexed fields and the air smells chemical."
Karl is currently rehearsing a new band in preparation for a series of live shows from the Spring onwards, the first of which is SonarSound in Tokyo on 7th April 2013. More to be announced soon.
Having worked together since 1980, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde formed the seminal electronic act Underworld in 1987. Equally adept at recording "dancefloor anthems" as they are at producing esoteric musical "soundscapes," the last few years have seen them record soundtracks for films by Danny Boyle and Anthony Minghella, score theatre pieces for the National Theatre and National Theatre of Scotland and of course, provide the soundtrack to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Smith and Hyde continue to make new work, as Underworld and as individuals -- Rick Smith's soundtrack to Danny Boyle's Trance is available on March 25th.
