Social mobile games company Wormhole Games has been officially launched today, the brainchild of founders and games industry luminaries Jamil Moledina and James Kelm. Wormhole Games’ vision is to make fun, gorgeous, multiplayer games that can be enjoyed by everyone. The company’s games are designed first for tablets and also smartphones, and the first game from the new studio will arrive on iOS in early 2013.
“Wormhole Games represents a decade of thought and play in both core multiplayer and social games. We’re executing at the exact right moment to bring them together for the unique and open tablet market,” CEO and co-founder, Jamil Moledina, said. “But what really drives us is the vision to evolve the art and science of games forward, taking everything that has previously worked separately, and creating something new and fun.”
Wormhole Games’ approach is to advance the industry to its next stage by making games that bring together the broad appeal and fun of classic titles and true community play, with the current explosive success of free-to-play social mobile games. Tablets offer unique creative input and display opportunities that allow for new levels of game innovation as well as unique marketplaces where new brands can rise. Wormhole Games is building games with the depth of gameplay traditional gamers desire, while broader consumers will find the fun immediately accessible and irresistible.
Wormhole Games was founded by two senior visionaries with experience in developing products for the web and mobile devices. Jamil Moledina headed up the Game Developers Conference for several years before transitioning to a senior business development role with Electronic Arts, then moving on to serve as Vice President of Business Development for the recently-acquired social mobile developer Funzio. James Kelm was senior worldwide product planner at Apple for the iBook, followed by his role as product manager for Google focusing on solutions for mobile advertising, shopping, mobile commerce, and payments, before also joining Funzio as producer. The two have assembled a founding team of leaders from across games and technology; and are looking to hire more talented, diverse people who share the company’s vision and passion for games, data, and geek culture. Initial seed funding for the company has come from private investments.
About Wormhole Games:
Wormhole Games is a San Francisco-based startup founded by Jamil Moledina and James Kelm, with a founding team pedigree including Electronic Arts, LOLApps, Funzio, Apple, Zynga and Google. A wormhole is a theoretical bridge between two otherwise separate parts of the universe; borrowing the metaphor, Wormhole Games connects the broad commercial success of free-to-play social mobile games with the irresistible fun of classic games. The company is looking for others who grok the core principles of fun.
