CSR plc (LSE: CSR; NASDAQ: CSRE) extended its leadership in Bluetooth® low energy technology today by introducing a collection of turnkey hardware and software solutions, based on the CSR µEnergy® platform, that OEMs and ODMs can customise to rapidly develop new and innovative Bluetooth Smart fitness, smart home and human interface products. Private demonstrations of these solutions include a smart LED lighting display featuring the integrated CSR µEnergy Bluetooth Smart platform that not only allows intuitive drag-and-drop control from an iPad® app, but also opens the door to enabling other Bluetooth Smart Ready systems throughout the home to control lighting, providing a more compelling user experience.
“CSR continues to drive innovation in Bluetooth low energy technology with compelling solutions that promote its rapid expansion into a broad range of Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Smart Ready products,” said Paul Williamson, Director of µEnergy products at CSR. “Key to our success in this market is our development of the kinds of turnkey hardware and software solutions we are demonstrating at CES that our customers are using to rapidly develop custom designs and bring their products to market quickly and cost effectively.”
Smart LED Lighting Control
CSR worked closely with PhotonStar LED Group plc, a British designer and manufacturer of smart LED lighting solutions, to create one of the most compelling demonstrations of how CSR µEnergy solutions enable smartphones, tablets and other smart devices to control systems throughout the smart home.
On its own, the advanced PSL LED lighting system is dimmable and colour tuneable. The addition of a CSR1000™ Bluetooth low energy chip massively increases the flexibility and intelligence of the lighting system by enabling lamps to be controlled individually or in groups using a CSR-developed iPad app which allows the creation of one-touch buttons to adjust the lighting in a room or portion of a room for reading, dining or watching movies, for example. Beyond this, the demonstration shows how easily control can be given to other smart devices in the home, such as enabling a smart media centre to automatically dim the lights in a home theatre when a movie starts or an alarm system to vary lighting throughout the home to deter intruders.
Smart Remote Control
CSR is also demonstrating a turnkey platform based on CSR µEnergy devices, with accelerometers and software to create an example design manufacturers can use to quickly develop the next generation of smart remotes for TVs and set top boxes. Using Freespace® MotionEngine™ software from Hillcrest Labs, the demo shows how products based on this turnkey CSR solution are able to employ gesture and voice commands to facilitate access to on-demand content, more easily perform searches and carry out more complex interactions with a smart TV.
Fitness Sensors
Continuing its focus on fitness-related applications, CSR is demonstrating two CSR µEnergy-based solutions for Bluetooth Smart foot pod and cycling sensors. Employing the CSR1000 device, accelerometers and proprietary algorithms based on CSR indoor dead reckoning technology, the foot pod demo calculates the pace of a runner and the distance covered and performs other functions using a CSR-developed iPhone® app. The cycle sensor similarly calculates cycle speed and cadence using an iPhone app, measuring both the rate of revolution of the bike wheel and also the pedals to provide training feedback that include pedalling rate, speed and distance based on wheel revolutions, as well as heart rate.
Windows® 8 Wireless Keyboards and Mice
Highlighting Bluetooth Smart Ready Windows 8 tablets and PCs, CSR is demonstrating wireless keyboard and mouse products from a number of ODM and OEM customers based on the CSR1000™ and CSR 1001™ µEnergy™ devices. With its built-in support for Bluetooth low energy HID devices, Windows 8 enables power saving, small form factor Bluetooth Smart keyboards and mice to connect directly without installing drivers or dongles and to achieve up to 10 years of operation from a pair of AA batteries.
Private, invitation-only demonstrations of these CSR Bluetooth Smart solutions are taking place during the International CES 2013 show in the Springhill Suites by Marriott, Las Vegas Convention Center, January 8-11. Attendees wishing to view these private demonstrations should contact CSR for an invitation.
