56 Percent of Communities Experienced Reduction in Crashes at Camera Intersections
WASHINGTON, Jan. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Communities across Florida are seeing a decrease in traffic collisions at red-light safety camera intersections, according to a new report issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).
The report reveals the enhancement to traffic safety that camera technology provides. Counties and municipalities in Florida who use red-light safety cameras to improve safety on their roadways submitted intersection data from July 2011 to June 2012. The report found that 56 percent of communities saw a total reduction in crashes at intersections where red-light safety cameras were installed. Forty-three percent saw a reduction in side-impact collisions – commonly referred to as t-bone crashes – and 41 percent reported that rear-end collisions are down.
"This new report gives us factual proof of something that we've known all along – red-light safety cameras are working," said David Kelly, Executive Director of the National Coalition for Safer Roads. "The safety benefits of these cameras continue to be proven. In Florida, drivers are changing their behavior and the roads are safer for everyone because of it."
Throughout Florida, communities experienced a reduction in drivers running red lights at all intersections, not just those with red-light safety cameras. They also reported traffic safety improvements across the board due to an increase in cautious driving.
