MIAMI, FL--(Marketwire - December 26, 2012) - A new Danish study concludes that HIV patients who smoke yet receive good care still face losing more years of life to smoking than to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
The study monitored 3,000 HIV patients who were treated in Demark from 1995 to 2012 and who also received organized care with free access to antiretroviral therapy. The findings revealed that 60 percent of the deaths were associated with smoking rather than HIV. The research shows how important it is to counsel patients, and smokers, on the important of quitting smoking.
"Our findings emphasize the importance of counseling HIV patients on smoking cessation, as smoking may impact their life expectancy considerably more than the HIV infection itself," wrote Dr. Marie Helleberg of Copenhagen University Hospital and colleagues.
Although the study tied nonsmoking to longer life in HIV patients, it did not establish a cause-and-effect relationship. However, EverSmoke Electronic Cigarettes believes it is still important for smokers, especially HIV patients who smoke, to be educated on how an e-Cig can help change their life and might change their health.
