Here are the top cyber news and stories of the day.
- If you are still running Android 2.3, watch out for the bad guys! - Kaspersky Labs has given a failing grade to Google for insecurities in Android 2.3. They found that the Trojan SMS is the leading malware developed for the OS, and that it is the most targeted mobile OS. The report continues with more details of most targeted versions of Android. - PixSteal-A Trojan Steals Images, Uploads to Iraqi FTP Server - A most recent Trojan steals images and .dmp files (Windows memory dump files) from computers and moves it to a remote FTP server in Iraq. “We suspect this malware is in its first stage of development for information theft, and we expect it to return as a more sophisticated attack,” wrote McAfee researcher Niranjan Jayanand. - Electrical grid attacked, cybersecurity more important now than ever – last month, Telvent, a smartgrid software and services provider, had internal firewalls and security systems breached. Officials at Telvent stated that, “the attack included the installation of malicious software and the theft of project files for OASyS SCADA (supervistory control and data acquisition), software that bridges the gap between enterprise networks and activities in the field.” Via Military Aerospace, more here.
- As hacker forums breed recruits, government stages cyber education counterattack - A recent report by Imperva found that “of all hacker forum conversations are related to beginner hacking and hacker training.” As well, five more percent of these forums are dedicated to tutorials. Hackers are racing against corporate and public sectors to recruit cybersecurity professionals. Via GCN, more here.
- DISA takes top honors at the 2012 DOD CIO awards -
DISA has received two of the DOD CIO awards on Oct 19th. “Miyi Chung, the deputy commander and technical director at the DISA Pacific Korea Field Office, won the first place award in the individual category. The White House Communications Agency Cyber Operations Team won second place in the team category.” Via Defense Systems, more here. - On cyber defense, U.S. ‘stuck at the starting line’ - General Alexander, DIRNSA/Commander USCYBERCOM, believes that the biggest barrier to improving our cyber posture is a basic lack of education. The lack of education is in regards to both how networks operate and the full scope of the threat. Via Federal News Radio, more here.
- eGlobalTech to Deliver Cyber Security services to U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) – “eGlobalTech announced today that it was selected by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) to provide support for the Cyber Pilot for Zero-Day Network Defense (ZND). Under this contract, eGlobalTech will provide full life-cycle support including program management, technology evaluation and acquisition, testing, certification and accreditation, implementation and ongoing technical support.” Via MarketWatch, more here.
- Disasters usually followed by scams - In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be wary of scams. The top 4 scams they warn of are; storm chasers, charity scams, social media scams and phony investments. Via Times Record News, more here.
