Pinger Reaches 10% of All U.S. Teens and Young Adults

Pinger, the company transforming the mobile space by making texting and talking free, today announced that its apps reach over 5.8 million active U.S. teens and young adults, which represents 10% of the overall U.S. teen market1. In addition, comScore data indicates that Pinger apps are among the top 5 non-native apps by installed base and usage metrics, and they enjoy significant usage among the teen and young adult audience.2

Due to a large percentage of Pinger’s customers turning an iPod touch into a “phone” using Pinger apps, the company has carved out new access to a large group of young consumers not otherwise reachable in the traditional mobile ad ecosystem. With this reach, Pinger has expanded the addressable teen and young adult mobile market for advertisers in the U.S.3 The company’s substantial access to a targeted group of highly-engaged users provides a unique opportunity for advertisers.

Pinger users have a rare combination of serious product engagement coupled with an intense use of mobile apps, through which they learn about and buy consumer products:

  • On average, users log into the app for 14 sessions per day
  • Pinger customers spend an average of 45 million minutes per day in the service
  • They spend more time texting than using Twitter or checking Facebook
  • Over half say they learn about products on a mobile device
  • 97% intend to buy consumer packaged goods

“Pinger serves one of the largest mobile teen and young adult audiences, and one of the most highly engaged audiences in mobile,” said Brian Gilbert, Director, Advertising and Monetization. “Pinger provides a truly unique opportunity for brands and advertisers to reach this highly-coveted group in a rich advertising environment in which consumers spend a significant portion of their time each day.”

Pinger is currently the #1 free texting provider and 7th largest mobile text carrier in the U.S.:

  • Pinger customers send over 1.7 billion text messages a month on average and have sent more than 20 billion total text messages
  • Users consume over 75 million voice minutes each month
  • During the 2011 holiday season, Pinger’s Textfree Voice + VM achieved the #1 Free App position in the iTunes App store

Pinger’s Textfree apps for iOS, Android and the web enable users to choose their own local phone number to text and call free with any U.S. phone as well as to over 28 countries.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
