Apple Prices iCloud

iCloud costs more than Amazon or Google

Apple disclosed iCloud pricing when it opened iCloud.com and releases an iCloud beta to registered developers the other day.

iOS 5 and OS X Lion users will get a free 5GB to start and iTunes music, apps, books and Photo Stream don’t count towards that 5GB.

Apple thinks 5 gigs should be enough, but if it’s not – and that seems to depend on how many videos and photos people have – another 10 gigs will be $20 a year; another 20 gigs $40 and another 50 $100.


iCloud will go live this fall after iOS 5 arrives. Then users will be able to sync e-mail accounts, contacts and calendars, store iWork files and photos, and manage, share and backup music, video, TV shows, apps and data across iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Macs. It’s supposed to remember all settings.

iCloud costs more than Amazon or Google, where a hundred bucks will 400GB but making comparisons with all of the other storage lockers in the sky is difficult as the offers vary.

Apple’s MobileMe, the $99-a-year service that iCloud replaces, will be retired the end of next June, giving users time to transition.
