While the market figures out whether it wants one of those new iHyped Apple iPad tablets when they get here in March, what it would do with it if it got one, whether it will kill the Kindle, threaten netbooks or backfire on Apple, note that it's the first time Apple is using its own chip, supposedly giving purpose to its 2008 PA Semi acquisition.

The custom-designed 1GHz high-performance, low-power Apple A4 is reportedly an ARM-based system-on-a-chip (SOC) integrating the ARM central processor, ARM graphics and ARM memory controller on a single die, a direction Intel's Moorestown Atom is going.

Apple says it's the reason iPad gets 10-hour battery life.

The iPad runs the same software as the 600MHz ARM-based iPhone. Its 9.7-inch screen is special too and is based on IPS LCD technology used in televisions. The $499-$829 device uses Flash memory and can store 16GB-64GB of data.
