Sun Microsystems Provides Core Technology for Verizon Developer Community

Adds Java Technology Expertise and Support for Mobile Application Developers

SAN DIEGO, BASKING RIDGE, N.J., and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- From CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment 2009®, Verizon Wireless said today it is working closely with Sun Microsystems, Inc., and leveraging Sun's technical capabilities, experience in managing developer communities and expertise in application delivery systems to support the recently launched Verizon Developer Community (VDC). The VDC is the place for mobile developers to learn about all of Verizon's applications programs, to submit applications for the soon-to-be launched V CAST Apps storefront, and to interact with Verizon experts and others in the mobile applications community.

Sun will provide key technologies and services to Verizon in support of VDC and to be used in building the V CAST Apps storefront, scheduled to launch later this year. The V CAST Apps storefront is built on the Sun Java(TM) Content Delivery Server, a core component of Sun's Java(SM) Warehouse Platform, enabling Verizon to manage and deliver mobile applications and personalized content such as ringtones and wallpaper to millions of devices across the Verizon Wireless network. In addition, the Sun Java Content Delivery Server powers the VDC lifecycle of content enabling developers to upload and manage their mobile applications via the VDC application submission portal.

"We are committed to the success of the VDC and excited about collaborating with Verizon Wireless to help them build a world-class application store and support their new developer program," said Jeet Kaul, senior vice president of Java engineering at Sun. "Working together, we will make it easy for developers to quickly get their applications to market, and to expand the community to include the millions of Java developers who build applications for Java ME, the leading mobile application platform."

About the VDC

The Verizon Developer Community was launched to foster innovation in the mobile application space. Developers who have created apps for platforms such as Java, BREW, Android, Windows Mobile and others are encouraged to join the VDC and to submit their concepts and applications for V CAST Apps.

The developer portal now offers simple, click-through agreements so developers can quickly and easily start the path to market for their applications.

The VDC provides a streamlined testing and certification process for applications, with the goal of having approved applications launched within 14 days of submission, and gives developers the opportunity to set their own prices for applications, among other things. To register for the VDC, visit http://developer.verizon.com.

News and updates about the Verizon Developer Community will be posted on Twitter at www.twitter.com/VDCConference.

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...

The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound e...
The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
