Rackspace Joins the Hosted Private Cloud Business

Customers can run a centrally managed VMware virtualization platform on dedicated private hardware in its hosting environment

Rackspace Hosting has gone into the hosted Private Cloud business.

It will let customers run a centrally managed VMware virtualization platform on dedicated private hardware in its hosting environment.

The company said there's demand from mid-sized and large enterprises for a more flexible and scalable hosting solution and that its stock-in-trade multi-tenant cloud, while flexible and cost-effective, isn't right for every segment. Its new Private Cloud single-tenant architecture offers increased control and security.

Rackspace CTO John Engates said, "Rackspace is implementing a true hybrid hosting vision that allows customers to create a blend of the right hosting solutions - from dedicated to multi-tenant cloud to specialized application hosting such as e-mail."

Putting a private cloud on Rackspace's infrastructure relieves the customer of having to maintain its own server and network and all. It may not be as utility-like as, say, Amazon but users can scale their virtual machines and only pay for what's running when it's on.

Rackspace, which describes the widgetry as an evolution of the dedicated virtual server offered by its managed hosting unit, has created three Private Cloud offerings: fundamental, essential and high availability.

Fundamental gets the user 16GHz of processing power, 16GB of RAM, 100GB FC/250GB SATA storage and 1TB bandwidth. Essential calls for 35GHz of processing power and 32GB of RAM and High Availability offer 500GB FC/500GB SATA storage.

Pricing varies because of customization but figure about six grand a month.
