I work in the Center for the Future of Work at Cognizant. We conduct
original research, analyze the results and share it with the world. We also
study trends from all sources and ponder their implications across many
industries. My focus is most often on mobile computing technologies and
systems, and IoT (Internet of Things). When we meet with large
multinational companies, the most valuable thing they seek from us are ideas.
Although we fancy ourselves to be analyst, writers and lecturers, we are –
in fact – merchants of ideas.
I have been pondering this notion all week. Yesterday, while working with our
IoT lab, I asked the question: "Are companies bringing their ideas to us
for implementation, or are they coming to us for ideas?" The majority of
companies today are coming to us for the ideas on how to take advantage of
IoT in their industry. That doesn't mean... (more)

The concept of the ‘technological Singularity’ often refers to a single
machine AI, like IBM’s Watson, but another popular theory is one of
‘swarm intelligence’, where instead the AI is the result of lots of small
machines forming into a larger virtual self.
The Conscious Web
Back in 2003 I wrote an article that described the forthcoming evolution of
the Cloud, and with it the development towards the SIngularity. The growing
use of XML Web services would see them evolve to become intelligent agents,
forming the basis for this collective.
This would fit well with t... (more)
Beyond IoT Hook Ups: How to Get Customers to Say ‘I Do'
When it comes to the Internet of Things, hooking up will get you only so far.
If you want customers to commit, you need to go beyond simply connecting
products. You need to use the devices themselves to transform how you engage
with every customer and how you manage the entire product lifecycle.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Sean Lorenz, Technical Product Manager for
Xively at LogMeIn, will show how "product relationship management" can help
you leverage your connected devices and the data they generate about customer
It's no secret that telecommuting is a highly disputed topic. For the general
employee, the jury is still out on the pros and cons of telecommuting. For
organizations like Yahoo!, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and U.S. Postal
Service, telecommuting is not an option due to the need to foster
collaboration, alleged employee abuse of telework benefits and mounting
security concerns, respectively. Among the startup scene and various other
organizations, though, telecommuting is seen as a way to provide flexibility
and improve work/life balance.
For IT professionals, however, su... (more)
JavaFX 8: The Keyboard Events Are Not Being Processed If a Scene Has Only
I ran into an interesting problems with JavaFX. When the GUI is done in FXML
it seems that if a scene has only shapes (e.g., Rectangle, Circle, etc.) the
handler method doesn’t receive keyboard events. And the problem seems to be
that there is no way (at least I don’t see it) to give a focus to such a
scene. I found a workaround, but I’d appreciate if someone could offer a
cleaner solution or confirm that this is a JavaFX bug.
Here’s a code sample that illustrates the problem and the solution:

“Free” reigns supreme when it comes to online marketing. But “pay” is
more profitable to your bottom line. In the popular Freemium world of digital
offerings, where free and premium content or services are offered, it’s
prudent to consider how you will transition free offerings into paid
subscriptions before you actually take that leap.
The conversion rate is all over the boards when transforming free into
premium services. Industry averages have been reported anywhere from 0.5% to
5%. When it comes to profit, that’s a huge range.
Here are six factors to smartly monetize your pr... (more)

The explosion of connected devices / sensors is creating an ever-expanding set of new and valuable data. In parallel the emerging capability of Big Data technologies to store, access, analyze, and react to this data is producing changes in business models under the umbrella of the Internet of Things (IoT). In particular within the Insurance industry, IoT appears positioned to enable deep changes by altering relationships between insurers, distributors, and the insured.

DevOps is about increasing efficiency, but nothing is more inefficient than building the same application twice. However, this is a routine occurrence with enterprise applications that need both a rich desktop web interface and strong mobile support. With recent technological advances from Isomorphic Software and others, it is now feasible to create a rich desktop and tuned mobile experience with a single codebase, without compromising performance or usability.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is causing data centers to become radically decentralized and atomized within a new paradigm known as “fog computing.” To support IoT applications, such as connected cars and smart grids, data centers' core functions will be decentralized out to the network's edges and endpoints (aka “fogs”). As this trend takes hold, Big Data analytics platforms will focus on high-volume log analysis (aka “logs”) and rely heavily on cognitive-computing algorithms (aka “cogs”) to mak...

Operational Hadoop and the Lambda Architecture for Streaming Data
Apache Hadoop is emerging as a distributed platform for handling large and fast incoming streams of data. Predictive maintenance, supply chain optimization, and Internet-of-Things analysis are examples where Hadoop provides the scalable storage, processing, and analytics platform to gain meaningful insights from granular data that is typically only valuable from a large-scale, aggregate view. Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship, and run any Linux application on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is particularly helpful for microservice architectures because their successful implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism – which is precisely one of the features of Docker.
